Dear Friends,

Happy New Year! Welcome back to school and welcome back to the iCollaboratory.

This winter, the iCollaboratory volunteers will be very busy. We have fun projects and events planned. We will be running three free book discussion groups and three free sponsored projects. Each participating student will need his/her own account. When you register for a project as a teacher, you will receive instructions for registering your students.

Book discussion groups begin in January and run through the end of February:

Rebecca Caudill Internet Book Club for grades 4-8
The Illinois Monarch Award Internet Book Club for grades K-3
Abraham Lincoln Book Award Discussion for High School

Sponsored Projects for Janurary-March:

When Will I Ever Use This? Career Exploration for grades 6-12 (January - March)
Why do I have to take math? Why is history important? In this project, students discover the relevance of school subjects through the investigation of future careers. Beginning with a survey of interest, students in grades 6-12 investigate a career using project-selected Internet sites. Students research, publish and discuss their views on the advantages and disadvantages, high school and post-high school classes needed, salary range and future outlook for their selected careers.

Songs My Family Taught Me for grades K-4 (January - March)
It’s fun to reminisce about songs we learned when we were younger. In this project, each student will select a song, identify where he/she learned it; find out from family members where and how the song came to be and share the song with others by creating a webpage that includes an image, song and text.

2010 Winter Olympics: Your Ticket to Vancouver for grades 4-12 (February)
Students take a survey about favorite Olympic sports. They read project-selected websites, news feeds and twitter feeds about the Olympics and publish their own Olympic news. After discussing the Olympic news, students take another survey, review the results and then write, illustrate and or animate what they have learned about the Olympics and Vancouver.

Hi Bonnie
When can I sign up for "Songs my family taught me"? This looks great. Also, I was looking at the other projects. When does "A Day in our Neighborhood" project begin?
Thank you and Happy New Year.
